Discover Tai Chi
WHO THEY ARE
Since being founded in 2016 with a small budget and a plan to run just one or two classes, Discover Tai Chi has rapidly expanded, now offering weekly Tai Chi and Qigong classes across 13 locations in Bradford, the Aire Valley and Craven.
Their weekly classes are all evidence based and improve health and wellness, and are especially beneficial for people who don’t feel comfortable in normal fitness classes, with a large number of participants being older and having long term health conditions or disabilities.
The organisation also offers services to improve health and wellbeing in workplaces, such as providing CPD (continuing professional development) to healthcare professions. They also provide specialist workshops, presentations, consultation and workplace wellness sessions.
This combination of services draws on the expert skills and experience of the Founder and Managing Director Philip, as well as Helen who is responsible for Development and Innovation in the organisation. Together, this close partnership provides 46 years of expertise with their combined experience as educators, trainers, project leaders and more.
THEIR IMPACT
The impact they have had on their community in just 3.5 years has been immense, growing from 5 to 200 regular participants, with close to 1000 people participating at some level since they began.
Some of Discover Tai Chi’s other achievements and services include:
- Running specialist workshops 2/3 times each year
- Partnering with Airedale General Hospital to run workplace wellness sessions for staff
- Working with GP practices and physiotherapy teams to talk about their research based programmes and offer workplace wellness for staff
- Running Tai Chi and Qigong taster sessions for local organisations
- Partnering with Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure to offer Tai Chi sessions for people living with disabilities
- Delivering consultation about the health benefits of Tai Chi to groups and organisations
- Running a Continuing Professional Development course for healthcare professionals
SERVICES DURING COVID-19
The impact of Covid-19 and the closure of their in-person classes has meant that Discover Tai Chi has rapidly developed the web presence and online content for which plans had already started. They now offer an online learning space for a small monthly subscription which means that people can continue to learn and reap the health benefits of practicing Tai Chi and Qigong through weekly videos and downloads. They now have 78 participants and have been receiving excellent feedback in the 4 weeks since this started.
Agency for Good has also been in conversation with Discover Tai Chi to consider how best to develop these online provisions. They plan to write a full online Tai Chi course called Tai Chi Foundations that will be hosted on a popular online tuition platform.
Despite these extreme changes and challenges, Philip and Helen and striving to continue to make positive impact, and when they return to their normal classes they will do so re-energised and with fresh eyes.
