Zimbabwe Educational Trust (ZET)
The people behind it
Andrew Jackson works alongside volunteers as the Operations Manager for the charity, and he is the organisation’s only staff member in the UK. He liaises with key staff from ZET’s three partners, Rafiki Girls Centre, Trinity Project and Foundation for Farming.
What they do
Zimbabwe Educational Trust (ZET) is a Yorkshire-based charity which supports grass roots partners in Zimbabwe to run a range of projects with different links to education.
The organisation was founded in 1987, following the independence of Zimbabwe, and began by bringing students from Zimbabwe to the UK to study. Now they support communities within Zimbabwe, providing many services and running various projects, including:
- Providing life skills and vocational training to vulnerable young women
- Helping children to gain access to birth registration documents and thereby access basic human rights
- Teaching conservation agriculture methods in schools
Their Impact
ZET’s vital work benefits some of the most vulnerable people in Zimbabwe, including orphans, young girls, and sex workers. They aim to break the cycle of poverty, deprivation and exploitation which denies people opportunities and limits the possibility for development in their lives. With the help of ZET’s educational projects, people are empowered to shape a more positive future for themselves and others. As Andrew Jackson has put it, ‘Education is the silver bullet which supports people to access and driver their own change, we want to help facilitate that.’
How you can help them
Challenges presented by the current COVID-19 situation include an impact on the organisation’s ability to fundraise, and they are looking into ways of adapting how they do this. To continue their essential, life-changing work, they need donations from those who can support ZET financially, whether you are an organisation or an individual. They also have a range of volunteering opportunities, in many different areas of the organisation, for people who want to get more involved by donating their time and skills.
During the time of COVID-19, ZET are supporting their partners and responding to COVID-19 in ways such as supporting the partners’ local district hospitals.
