WHO ARE KYA?
Kirklees Youth Alliance (KYA) are an independent, community centred group of organisations striving to deliver a variety of services to young people in West Yorkshire.
They aim to work within the community in the Kirklees area to give young people the provisions and resources necessary for them to become more active within their community and to gain vital life skills.
Organisations who are a member of KYA achieve these aims by running youth clubs and social action projects within the community. They benefit from the support of KYA who provide support in many ways including regular meetings and training in areas such as safeguarding and youth mental health first aid.
In the spirit of the name ‘alliance’, KYA holds a strong focus on collaboration. Their services are instrumental in supporting and increasing the capacity of its member organisations who are delivering these activities for young people.
One of KYA’s major projects is the ‘Healthy Holidays’ programme, due to begin in Summer 2020, which provides invaluable support to young people who may be at risk of hunger, isolation and inactivity whilst not at school.
Given the current Covid-19 situation, KYA are also looking to move some of their services online, providing IT support to youth groups and making use of technologies such as video conferencing, in order to continue making a profound impact.
KYA’s development manager Susan Greenwood, who works with the support of Healthy Holidays Programme Administrator Itziar Fernandez Cachemaille, has a long background in working in roles to improve the safety and wellbeing of young people. She is passionate about creating high-quality services that have a real impact on young people as well as communities as a whole.
KYA’S IMPACT
The impact of KYA’s work is widespread; they improve mental health of the young people involved, allow organisations to develop the best services possible, create employment opportunities and increase social consciousness.
Not to mention the ultimate result of their work, which is that young people benefit from safe and enjoyable activities that, as Susan Greenwood puts it, ‘help them to reach their full potential and make happy and successful transitions into adulthood.’
WHO CAN HELP?
Organisations providing relevant services can join the network, and KYA can benefit from the help of anyone, whether you are a business that can donate resources such as sports equipment or snacks, or an individual who can provide expertise such as digital skills!
With the help of the Agency for Good, KYA will have a website and social media presence which means that people interested in any aspect of the organisation can access clear information and understand what KYA is about.
